Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II First flight 1972

One of my all time favorite modern airplanes…50 mm gatling gun(the biggest gun mounted on single seat airplane), titanium tub for the pilot, twin engines placed above and behind the wings for ground fire protection, twin vertical tails partialy covering the engine exhaust, and a huge amount of external ordnance mounting points. Even the wheels were left out of the fuselage for easier wheels up landing in case of hydraulic failure. All designed to go up against tanks and other heavy ground targets and still survive. Definitively not the fastest airplane in the Air Force, but certainly the toughest.
